One way to screw thieves

TWEED police were out at Bunnings, Tweed Heads South on Saturday giving away anti-theft number-plate screws in an effort to reduce number-plate theft.

Crime prevention officer Senior Constable Jennifer Poolman said thieves stole number plates for many reasons, including petrol station drive-offs to avoid detection, and also to avoid tolls and fines, speeding offences, running red lights and many other criminal activities.

She said replacing ordinary screws with anti-theft screws was a simple process that would help prevent number-plate thefts.

"Anti-theft screws turn one way only, preventing the thief from being able to remove the number plate with a screw driver," Snr Const Poolman said.

Once attached to a number plate, the anti-theft screws can only be removed with a specially designed tool that cannot be bought in shops.

"When a thief tries to remove the screws they lock up," Snr Const Poolman said. "People should take the time to replace the screws on their cars. They are easy to fit and will be available at no cost."

The screws were donated by Bunnings Warehouse and are still available for sale.

Representatives from Tweed Neighbourhood Watch groups were also at Bunnings Saturday morning in an effort to keep in touch with the community and learn more about simple anti-theft measures.

Number-plate theft should be reported to police via the Police Assistance Line on 131 444. Callers will be given an event number and then need to visit an RTA Motor Registry.
