Opinion: Molly doesn’t rate in top ten

AS a card carrying member of the Countdown generation I have to express my slight disappointment with the series Molly which has just screened on TV.

I don't think it adequately captured the excitement of the show nor the importance of the era muscially.

Dressing people up in wigs and putting a few props like old Holden cars and early model mobile phones does not a show make.

I remember Countdown was THE show everyone my age would watch and if you missed out on it you'd be left out of the conversation at school the next day.

I remember playing touch footy, or having kicks at my best friend's house on a Sunday arvo and at 5.55pm sprinting home so I could sit down in front of the TV for Countdown's familiar drummed intro.

Molly the mini-series didn't really go too deeply into anything and much of the footage and subject matter dealt with has been covered in documentaries I've seen before.

Credit should go to the actor, Samuel Johnson, who played Molly in the mini-series.

Despite having to work with a pedestrian script, he really caught the essence of Ian 'Molly' Meldrum, particlularly his impish smile.

I don't think we've seen the last of this kind of "slice of history" Aussie mini-series. We've already had Paper Giants and the series on INXS.

Surely, with the passing of Stevie Wright, a series on the Easybeats would be next on the agenda?
