Orchid Society preparing for annual show

NOT long now until the annual Autumn Orchid Spectacular at the Maclean Bowls Club. All welcome to come along and admire the beauty of nature, on Friday April 29 from 9am to 9pm, and Saturday April 30 from 9am to 2pm. There will be plants for sale, and many raffle treats and prizes to be won as well. So do get your raffle tickets. Before that, there will be a display at Yamba Fair shopping centre: Thursday April 21 to Saturday April 23, when raffle tickets will also be available.

At the March meeting a beaut variety of 138 plants were benched among nature enthusiasts to admire and assess. Our long-time experienced member, Ken Woods, gave an appreciated practical potting demo, with an informative question and answer time.

On this occasion, winners also varied. Judges’ Choice Orchid winner being Terry and Penny Bird’s Novelty Cattleya Lucky Charms “PJ”. The Popular Vote Orchid winner, Neil and Carol Campbell’s Oncidium Sunlight “Hilo Honey”. In the Flower section, Judges’ Choice Brian Donaghy’s Dahlia “Tiger Bay”. Popular Vote, Chris Vestergaard’s Black Bat Plant.

The next meeting is on Saturday April 16, with guidance on show preparation. Venue: Presbyterian Church Hall, Church Street, Maclean. Plants are to be benched by 1pm for judging; and the meeting begins at 1.30pm. Includes afternoon tea.
