OPINION: OTT birthday parties no longer in vogue?
Motherhood Moments with Leah Wallace, DEX columnist
I have to admit, I was really looking forward to attending some over-the-top first birthday parties, with jumping castles, petting zoos, chocolate fountain, you have all seen the ad. But alas not a single goat, pony or fairy floss machine in sight!
There really is no point going over the top for a first birthday, the child isn't going to remember it, the guests are going to be grumpy and want a nap after about an hour, not just the kids, and quite frankly, it's expensive.
My daughter turned one at the beginning of the month, so her birthday went by the first time a little unnoticed as it coincided with the show and when all the females and half the males of her extended family are involved with the show there isn't really time to celebrate and you know what, that kid had no clue, no idea that on her birthday there wasn't a jumping castle or petting zoo set up in the backyard.
The next weekend we had a simple BBQ with family and friends and it was, more than anything a chance for her mum and dad to say thank you for all the support we had been given over the last year.
Bring on second birthdays; I am expecting Cirque du soleil style entertainment!
