Our next PM? Julie Bishop and Tanya Plibersek the favs

THE next leader of Australia could be a woman, as new polling suggests the deputies of both Labor and the Coalition are now more popular than the leaders.

In Roy Morgan researched released on Monday, Foreign Minister Julie Bishop is the preferred leader with 34% support, just ahead of Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull, who sits at 25%.

On the other side of the aisle, Deputy Labor Leader Tanya Plibersek is now more popular than her boss, with 25% support while Opposition Leader Bill Shorten languishes with just 14%.

Despite this, Coalition voters as a group still prefer Mr Turnbull (35%) ahead of Ms Bishop (25%) and former Prime Minister Tony Abbott (16%).

The scary thing for Mr Turnbull though, is that Ms Bishop's rating has gone up 8% in the past six months, and Mr Abbott's support has increased 6%.

In the same period, the PM's party support has fallen 21%.

ALP voters meanwhile still support Bill Shorten (29%), which is up 11% compared to May this year but he's only slightly ahead of Ms Plibersek (28%) and Transport Minister Anthony Albanese (24%).

If Mr Turnbull was to resign today, most voters would support Ms Bishop stepping up to lead the nation (50%), a long way ahead of Mr Abbott (16%).

The polls were taken over three days at the start of last week, speaking to 552 voters.
