Editorial - Tuesday, August 20: Our Pat’s off and racing

YESTERDAY was the last day for our sport editor Patrick Allen.

And I want to take the opportunity to thank him for his hard work and effort while at The Daily Examiner.

As well as recognising the work of our contributors through the Contributor of the Year Award, Pat's always taken me by surprise by managing to pull the most magical of stories out of what seems like just another sporting event.

From using our front page to invite Sheikh Mohammed to the Ramornie Handicap to sharing the debacle of the runaway steer at the Ulmarra Campdraft, the quality and value of his work was rightly rewarded when he was crowned 2012 APN sports writer of the year.

We'll miss his tips (in racing and in news stories) and on behalf of the DEX team I want to wish Pat all the best for his future, and, unlike how we feel about Tom Waterhouse, we look forward to seeing his face on the TV reporting on racing.

All the best, mate.
