OUR SAY: Degrading slogans not okay
AUSTRALIANS are portrayed overseas, and at home, to have a pretty liberal and dirty sense of humour with an almost "anything goes" mentality.
While all of those things are true, we generally know where the line is.
I can remember seeing a Wicked camper when I was a teenager and thinking how cool it would be to drive around Australia with my friends in such a cool van, so I get the drawcard.
I understand why so many tourists come to Australia, hire a Wicked van and set off on their trip. Mind you, that camper wasn't degrading women or inciting hate.
More recently there have been many Wicked campers with completely obscene and disgraceful slogans that cross the line.
We aren't even talking about toeing the line, this is leaps and strides across it.
You can have a dirty sense of humour without degrading women.
It's simple really: don't talk about women like they are objects, don't talk about women like they are less than human, don't talk about women like they are only good for sex.
So, should Wicked campers be banned from areas? Should they be regulated? Should they be stopped?
I'm not so sure that's the right way to go.
But I certainly think a more decent human being needs to do the artwork and come up with ideas.
I'm more in favour of reminding the people renting a Wicked camper, or even just visiting Australia, that degrading women is not funny and it certainly isn't okay.
