OUR SAY: Don’t give your vote away cheaply

BY THIS time next week we are likely to be into an election campaign set to run longer than most of us would prefer.

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull is expected to call a double dissolution poll tomorrow and the race for the government benches will be on.

As residents of the Page electorate, we can expect plenty of attention during the campaign.

The seat, which will come down to a contest between sitting MP Kevin Hogan and the former member Janelle Saffin, will be one of the crucial contests in the campaign.

If the ALP is to be any hope of winning government, Ms Saffin would have to unseat Mr Hogan.

As a result, the major parties are likely to send some of their heavy hitters to campaign here, but we shouldn't be easily swayed by their presence.

It is important that those people willing to consider voting for either the major party, or indeed one of the alternatives, don't give away their vote cheaply.

Locals should consider carefully what the big issues are in both Page and nation, and let the candidates and whoever else comes this way know that we expect them to deliver. If there are not major promises regarding jobs, health and education made in Page then the politicians should be told to go away and think again.

Who will you vote for in the electorate of Page?

This poll ended on 10 May 2016.
