OUR SAY: The night that matters
THE upcoming Federal Election is tipped to be called this weekend and held on July 2; an eight-week marathon that I can't imagine too many people are looking forward to.
If it goes ahead as suggested, the long campaign will be a huge political risk for Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull.
He is banking on having the stamina and the message to win a new term on the government benches.
But the biggest risk is surely that the election could be decided, one way or the other, before it is even called.
For all the photo opportunities, announcements and speeches that will happen over the next two months, it is hard to imagine any of them will be more influential than the 30-minute speech to be delivered by Treasurer Scott Morrison tonight.
The Budget has rarely held such direct significance on the outcome of an election, because rather than this year's Budget being an economic plan for the next four years, it will be a manifesto for re-election for the Coalition.
Considering how poorly its 2014 Budget was received, it represents a huge gamble to tie the election so closely to this year's document, which is being delivered in tough economic times.
The government literally can't afford to hand out wads of cash to voters, but can't risk being seen to be too tough either.
It will be a precarious balancing act.
