Owner defends powered parachutes after tragedy

TRIBUTES continue to flow in for one of Theodore's "larger than life" characters, Shaun Edwards, three days after his fatal accident.

Shaun leaves behind four young daughters and his long-time partner after a crash involving a powered parachute on Saturday morning.

The tragic accident is harder for the community to comprehend because of how rare these incidents are.

Robbert DeGroot, the owner of Australian Powered Parachute, has been operating them for 10 years and said the devices were the safest form of flying.

"They're a parachute with a motor on it, and if the motor stops they'll still parachute to the ground," he said.

"(But) everything you do in life has a risk, even driving… you'll hurt yourself more in a car accident than you would in one of these in general."

While Robert said injuries involving powered parachutes were rare, humans could still make errors like they did with anything.

"They've been around for many, many, many years and the amount of people who have hurt themselves is very minimal," he said.

Neighbours remembered watching Shaun fly over their properties, while friends described him as a "beautiful soul" who will be greatly missed in their small community.

Others shared memories of a nurturing, free-spirited man who was sweet, always smiling and fun-loving.

WHAT IS A POWERED PARACHUTE?

A powered parachute is an ultra light aircraft that typically has a tube frame, which hangs below a parachute like a pendulum.

Yesterday's report incorrectly stated he was flying an aerochute, a type of powered parachute.
