Pacific Hwy is Hogan’s priority

HE HAS been going full-pelt since September 7, but newly elected Federal Member for Page Kevin Hogan has no plans of slowing down.

He may still be without a Grafton office and without any staff, but Mr Hogan said the transition was a smooth one.

Surrounded by friends, family and supporters, he was yesterday officially sworn in as the federal member.

"I had this overwhelming sense on the Sunday (after the election) of what a privilege this is," Mr Hogan said.

"To wake up and know that the people of the community put their trust in you to represent them in Canberra.

"It really is such a great honour."

Mr Hogan said he planned to spend two or three days a week in the Clarence Valley and had full intentions to start crossing election promises off this list.

"The first big thing is the Pacific Hwy," he said.

"We will fund it 80%, it is going to happen."

He said the number of jobs the seven-or-so-years project would create for the Valley was something to cheer about and the long-term benefits for tourism and business would flow on seamlessly.

"The next thing is cost of living: we're abolishing the carbon tax and this will help the people in Page," Mr Hogan said.

Red tape was third on his list and said small businesses were being smothered in red tape and they needed it trimmed back.

"We need to change it straight away," he said.

"I've got a job to do and I will do anything I can to earn that trust from the community."

HOGAN WINS

Hogan defeated the ALP's Janelle Saffin 45,154 to 40,787 on a two-party preferred basis, securing a swing of 6.73% to the Coalition.
