Palmer strikes trouble at rally
HE warned us of the danger.
Now Grafton’s Lee Palmer has found himself in the thick of it after his Landrover Discovery found trouble in the third day of the rally of Estoril-Portimao-Marrakech on Tuesday.
Teamed with Amadeus Matzker for the 105km special stage in the mountainous eucalyptus forests, the mechanic’s car came in contact with a stray stone, smashing the steering, the brakes and the axle of the pair’s vehicle.
The crew made it to the finish line where they carried out a one-and-a-half-hour repair job.
Despite the carnage they were able to continue and arrived just in time to catch the ferry to Morocco, where a 725km stage, including 225km of timed-special stages, awaited the competitors.
Palmer is involved as a freelance navigator after eight completed Dakar rally events in the past decade.
He has previously entered into the legendary race in the bike, truck and car categories and is one of the few to make the trek across all three.
He now works at Cross Roads in Grafton.
