Parties need to do more for environment: ACF

LABOR is beating the Coalition on environmental policies, the Australian Conservation Foundation says, but only because Tony Abbott has promised to ditch the carbon tax.

Analysis of both major parties' policies by the ACF has also found the "northern Australia" proposals from both parties neglect the environment.

ACF chief executive Don Henry said politicians were talking about economic expansion "as if it bears no relation to the environment".

He said "in the real world", the two were deeply connected, and a discussion of one could not ignore the other.

Unsurprisingly, the ACF analysis rated The Greens the top party for protecting Australia's natural environment, despite concerns about the party's position on forestry agreements in Tasmania.

Mr Henry said both the major parties still "need to do much more" if they wanted to get the votes of people concerned about the nation's environment.
