Passionate about taking opportunities
AFTER seeing her son pass through the Opportunity Program at South Grafton Primary School, Janelle Buckley has an increased passion for her job.
Janelle is now the dedicated teacher of the Opportunity Class (OC) at South Primary and is proud to be a part of the program.
“I have taught the only OC class in the Clarence Valley for five years, and I get to see my students grow and change over the two years I am with them,” Janelle said. “I am passionate about the program and proud to be a part of it.”
To be apart of the program, students need to submit an application and the sit a test in year four to be a part of the program in years 5 and 6.
Students still learn from the basic stage three curriculum, while teachers concentrate more on individual learning styles and give students a choice of tasks.
“We give students an opportunity to choose to do what they enjoy through homework contracts. It really encourages their inquisitive nature, higher-order thinking and encourages independence and time management,” Janelle said.
“It is excellent to get like-minded children in the same environment.”
The program is available to any year four student and forms should be readily available from the schools office.
Forms must be submitted by this Friday, May 22.
