Pearson makes encouraging return to track

SALLY Pearson has capped off a stellar 24 hours for Australian track and field.

On the back of the successful launch of Nitro Athletics in Melbourne, the 2012 Olympic hurdles champion continued the good news on the other side of the world.

In her long-awaited return to the track, Pearson finished an encouraging third in the 60m hurdles final at an indoor meet in Germany, just a stride behind America's outdoor world record-holder Kendra Harrison.

After missing the Rio Olympics because of achilles and hamstring problems, the 30-year-old travelled to the IAAF meet in Karlsruhe instead of taking part in Nitro because she wanted to reacquaint herself with the international scene.

Pearson looked good in her heat and then clocked 7.91sec in the final, with Harrison claiming victory in 7.76sec from German Cindy Roleder (7.90sec).

Pearson's time was less than two tenths of a second shy of her 60m hurdles indoor PB of 7.73sec set in 2012.

The 2011 world champion will continue her comeback on the indoor circuit in Berlin, Dublin and Birmingham over the next fortnight.

Pearson has endured a horror two years, with a broken wrist forcing her out of the 2015 world championships and her body again letting her down in the lead-up to Rio last year.

After contemplating retirement six months ago, she is now coaching herself and looking forward to this year's world championships in London and then the 2018 Commonwealth Games at her home town of the Gold Coast.
