Peter Furler at Easterfest 2013

Peter Furler, Steve Taylor join 2015 Easterfest line-up

HE'S packed venues from New York to Morocco, but for Aussie rocker Peter Furler, there's nothing like 'coming home' to Easterfest.

The founder of Newsboys will bring Peter Furler Band to the 2015 festival - two years after debuting as a solo artist at the huge Toowoomba event.

Furler, who originally hails from the Sunshine Coast, will not only head up his own show but also play drums with Steve Taylor and The Perfect Foil.

Taylor, a long-time friend and lyric writer for Furler, recently launched a Kickstarter project to raise $40,000 to create a new album. Such was the interest that more than $120,000 was raised.

Furler said he was looking forward to getting behind the drums again.

In the US in coming months he will perform grueling three and a half hour gigs with Taylor, playing more than 15 songs with his own band before doing the same with Taylor's.

Furler's latest album, Sun and Shield, has been launched to critical acclaim in the US with many loving the 'raw' sound of songs like Dare I Say.

"People like it because it is completely different from what it out there,'' Furler said.

Furler is especially looking forward to playing his latest songs at Easterfest next year, saying there is nothing like the raw energy of an Aussie crowd.

"Easterfest is a highlight for any performer,'' he said, rating it as one of the best music festivals in the world.

"The event there just takes over the city and the city becomes part of it,'' he said.

Some of his fondest memories of firsts there, including playing his first solo show after leaving Newsboys two years ago - with his wife Summer playing keyboards.

Furler also remembers his early days of selling lamingtons in Toowoomba to pay for gigs - a far cry from his success that has seen him sell more than seven million records and create 25 number one hits in the Christian music industry.

Noting speculation about AC/DC calling it a day after 40 years, Furler says he had plenty of music in him yet after more than 25 years on the road.

Easterfest kicked off on Thursday afternoon with more than 40 shows in venues across the city.

The event will welcome over 10,000 artists and visitors from interstate and overseas this weekend.

Minister for Tourism Jann Stuckey said Easterfest was added to the state's major events portfolio in 2013 after growing into one of Southern Queensland Queensland's largest events over the past 15 years.
