Hockey season blasts off

HOCKEY: Last Saturday’s meeting at the South club was well attended, which shows just how keen players are to get the new comp started, which looks to begin on Saturday, March 27.

Therefore, we only have six weeks until hockey hits off. All A-grade players have no doubt started their own fitness training and regiment with proper stretches, sprints and even practising some fancy ball skills.

Players in AR1 and AR2 are surely contacting team members, organising coaches and planning their first training session.

Maybe they have even had a short jog around the block, or along the beach. Players in AR3 and B-grade – don’t even think about training, you might get injured.

Last week I mentioned players who are training with the North Coast Academy of Sport. Apologies to Rosie Peterson, has now also been asked to join the academy hockey squad.

At this time of year, all clubs are keen to attract new members.

South Juniors are looking for new players.

Any girls from Kinder to Year 6 wanting to play should contact Kerry Barton at South Grafton High School on 66421466/ fax: 66422027 or email:

Training will be Thursdays from 4-5pm, Brent Livermore Field, commencing February 18.

The South High Hockey Club will have their next meeting on February 17 at 6.30pm in the staff common room.

Marg Pearson is currently scouting for players in Years 5 or 6 to play in the mixtures team in women’s C-grade. Many of her players have graduated to high school and she is keen for new recruits so phone her on 6642 5616 if you wish to join the team.

Demon’s training has started already. They are hitting up on a Monday and Wednesday night at 6pm. All current and new players are welcome. What keen little red and green devils!

Grafton High’s sign up will be next Monday afternoon (15 Feb) at the Hockey Pavilion from 5pm until 6.30pm. They will be having a hit around session on the turf, so the girls should bring along their shin pads, mouthguard and stick.

To finish up the afternoon, they will have a slice of pizza and a cold drink.

A deposit of $100 is required on sign up day, which will include the cost of their new skirt. GHS are missing a number of uniforms and umpiring shirts from last year, so if you have something that needs to be returned please bring it with you next Monday.

Grafton High Club is also looking for coaches and managers for their teams so call down to the sign on this Monday or let Di Mitchell (6642 3212) know if you would like to help out.

Need a good laugh? Grafton HS Hockey Club is running a fundraiser to “Menopause the Musical” in Coffs Harbour on March 19. It is a truly sensational show for both men and women. You will have to hold your sides and your jaw will ache from laughter. Tickets are limited and selling fast. Cost is $70 for your tickets and bus trip to Coffs. For more information contact Di Mitchell (6642 3212) or Donna Pate (6643 2436).

Time to get organised.

The registrar is asking that team nomination forms be handed in by March 5 to allow time for all information to be loaded onto the computer.

Following Club AGM’s, secretaries are to complete the Club Information Sheet and forward it to Janelle Pole (the Association Secretary).

Don’t forget to contact me on if you have news to be published in Hockey Hailer. Hoo-roo!
