Player’s service to state teams recognised
MIKE Russ can add yet another feather to his cap.
Last week The DEX revealed he would make his debut for Australia at the Masters Over-50 Hockey World Cup in the Netherlands in June.
At the weekend he competed for Grafton in the NSW Masters Over-50s Championships at Taree.
At the tournament, Russ along with teammate Cliff Green were recognised for 10 years' service to state representative sides.
It came as no surprise, therefore, when Russ was named for NSW to compete at the nationals in September for an 11th time. But this will be his first time as vice-captain.
Green was selected as captain of the NSW No.2 side. It was a middle-of-the-road performance for Grafton, which needed to win its final match on Saturday night to qualify for the semi-finals in Division A and B.
After a 2-0 loss to eventual champions Illawarra, a 2-1 win over Manning and 3-3 draw with Goulburn, Grafton A lost its final match 1-0 against Newcastle.
It was a similar story for Grafton B, which defeated Illawarra B 1-0, drew 1-1 with Orange and defeated New England 3-0 before a 2-0 loss to Central Coast.
While both grades missed the finals, they had done enough to avoid Sunday's relegation battles and meant Dave Ross (Division A), Robert Blanchard (Division B) and Peter Gibbons (Division C) were available to umpire the grand finals.
This week Ross is in Melbourne competing at the Australian Police and Emergency Services Games.
