Police confirm Matt Essery, 20, killed in motorbike crash

POLICE have confirmed the 20-year-old killed in a motorcycle crash at McLeans Ridges on Saturday night was Matthew Essery.

It's understood Mr Essery, of Ballina, was travelling south on Cowlong Rd about 8pm when he failed to negotiate a turn on his motorbike and collided with a tree.

Police were notified on Sunday morning after the victim was spotted by a motorist who was travelling along Cowlong Road at 10.20am.

Officers from the Richmond Local Area Command established a crime scene, which will be forensically examined.

He had been riding a red Yamaha XT 250.

Police said Mr Essery's family have since been notified.

An investigation has been launched into the incident and police are appealing for any witnesses to come forward and contact Crime Stoppers.

A report will be prepared for the Coroner.

An autopsy may be performed, but police believe the victim was unlikely to have survived the initial impact, based on the extent of his injuries.
