Bikie gang function on police radar in Coffs Harbour

A BIKIE gang function at the weekend was the focus of a major police operation to detect and disrupt criminal activity.

Dozens of members of the Lone Wolf outlaw motorcycle club congregated on Saturday for a function at the clubhouse in Toormina.

A major police operation was launched in response, involving detectives, the dog squad and additional police resources from Sydney.

During the operation, an 18-year-old Coffs Harbour man believed to be an associate of the Lone Wolves was arrested outside the Toormina clubhouse and charged with common assault.

Two men were also nabbed by police outside a hotel in Grafton St for the alleged possession of ecstasy.

The operation resulted in 18 infringement notices, including tickets for failing to quit, and two notices issued for vehicle defects.

Coffs Clarence crime manager Detective Inspector Darren Jameson said police would keep targeting outlaw gang activities.

"Organised crime gang members continue to remain a focus of police - in particular, their long association with drug supply and other illegal activities," Inspector Jameson said.

Recently introduced anti-consorting laws make it an offence for convicted criminals to repeatedly associate with each other, and carry maximum penalties of three years in jail and a $16,500 fine.

Inspector Jameson said police would continue to monitor the Lone Wolf clubhouse and the Gladiators clubhouse in Grafton.

"The laws give police the powers to disrupt and dismantle criminal organisations, and given those laws, there is no future in groups that engage in organised criminal activity," he said.
