Possible travel ban could halt Steele’s charge to Sochi
BUNDABERG'S Michelle Steele is on track to secure a place in the winter Olympics team, but the twin suicide bombings have put the Australian team's participation in doubt.
Two bombings in Volgograd in Southern Russia have raised safety concerns, Foreign Minister Julie Bishop told the Australian the decision to prevent Australians from competing would not be made straight away.
"We don't want to lightly prevent our athletes participating in any event for which they have trained for years, but the safety and the safety of their families and other spectators is of the utmost concern," Ms Bishop said.
Australian athletes said they were undeterred by the bombings and would continue to train for the February 7 start of the games.
