Post office closes its doors, bringing the end of an era
WARREGAH Island resident Dorothy Lewis used the Chatsworth Island General Store and Licensed Post Office for 69 years before it closed down recently.
Mrs Lewis said going to the post office was a social event and the attached store made a wonderful place to meet up with old friends.
"You could get your mail, get a bite to eat and a coffee and meet up with people you had not seen for years," Mrs Lewis said.
"The post office was there long before I came.
"It was lovely, we used to walk in and we were treated with good service.
"I am very sad to see the post office go, it had always been a good service.
"Unfortunately, I believe we now have to go the Harwood post office.
"We used to just walk in and get our mail."
She said although the post office closed down, the general store was still open and was a wonderful service.
An Australia Post spokeswoman said the office had closed "unexpectedly".
"Mail for PO Box holders and residents who were collecting their mail over the counter is now available for collection at the Harwood Island Licensed Post Office which is approximately 6km away," she said.
"To minimise any inconvenience to our customers, PO Box holders are being offered a free six-month mail redirection to an alternative post office in the local area. The closure was a result of contractual issues between the licensee and Australia Post."
