Predicted storms could be severe

IT'S time for people up and down the North Coast to batten down the hatches with Bureau of Meteorology warning of some severe thunder storms.

Manager of the Coffs Harbour Bureau of Meteorology station, Ashleigh Wilson said the storms were expected all the way from the Mid North Coast to the Queensland border.

Ms Wilson said super cells were not expected to come near the coast but were a possibility west of the great dividing range.

"A super cell is when severe convective weather occurs," Ms Wilson said.

"It's to do with the heat, convection is the rising of heat and the rising moisture inside thunder storm cells encourages the system to become larger and more intense.

"Super cells are often associated with hail."
