Principal blasted: 'No excuse for failing to protect kids'

FORMER Toowoomba Catholic school principal Terence Hayes has been heavily criticised for defending his decision not to report pedophile teacher Gerard Byrnes.

Byrnes raped 13 children at the school seven years ago.

Mr Hayes, in a legal submission to the Royal Commission into Child Sex Abuse, said he did not have the appropriate advice on how to handle the abuse claims.

He did however accept responsibility for failing to act.

Counsel assisting the royal commission Gail Furness and Andrew Naylor blasted Mr Hayes' submission, saying he had no excuse for failing to protect the children.

"The protection of children should be the guiding principle in all actions taken in a school setting when a disclosure is made."

It is not known when the findings out of the Royal Commission into Child Sex Abuse will be released.
