Providing a forum for rural gay community

JAMIE Fife knows what it's like to feel alone and isolated while coming to terms with his sexuality.

He said he struggled a lot as a gay man growing up in Mackay.

In a proactive move to let others know they aren't alone, he has created an online hub where people can anonymously share their own stories or read those written by others, called I'm Not Alone.

He said the title represented something that he and others could and should say every day.

The 27-year-old candidly admitted he hid his identity from his family and friends.

Jamie suffered undiagnosed depression for years, choosing instead to release his pent up feelings through drugs and alcohol.

Fast forward seven years and Jamie has a more positive outlook on life.

"I've learned that you're in control of your own happiness and you determine that," he said.

But he said he knew others would be feeling like he had.

He said in rural areas, there was more of a challenge in dealing with feeling isolated because, unlike in metropolitan areas, there were no real groups for the gay community.

"I want to provide a way for people who have struggled like myself to be able to read these stories and know they aren't alone ... that there is hope and other people to connect to," Jamie said.

"Back when I was going through everything ... if I had stuff like this to read over and know that I wasn't the only one having these thoughts ... I might not have been as depressed or been has harmful to myself," he said.
