Rain failed to dampen spirits at Brooms Head fun run

CALL them brave, foolhardy or just plain crazy, but the rainy weather failed to put a dampener on the spirit of those who turned out to the annual Brooms Head 3Bs fun run on Sunday.

True to his word, nothing was going to stop Ken Crampton from making the most of his first opportunity to take part in the event he has helped organise since it first started in 2007, one of only two who braved the conditions on two wheels.

"We got blasted by the wind when we were out on the road, but it was still a lot of fun," he said.

"It was a bit damp and a bit windy, but it was a good day."

Organiser Laurie Fitzpatrick said the club appreciated the support of everyone who turned up to the fun run, which raised around $1000 for the Westpac Rescue Helicopter.

"It was wet, but the people that decided to brave the elements had a good time," he said.

"We just bit the bullet and decided to do it between showers. There were some times when it was really blowing a gale, but most of the time it was manageable, not a total loss."

Mr Fitzpatrick said the course had to be changed this year, and due to the erosion of the beach over the past few weeks from heavy seas, the track stuck to the roads of Brooms Head.

"Hopefully next year we will have a proper beach and it will be back to normal," he said.
