Rally to keep Northern Rivers gasfield free

ORGANISERS of today's rally to declare the Northern Rivers gasfield free are hoping people aren't complacent because of the suspension of Metgasco's licence.

"The rally is to gather people, to make everyone aware that the fight is not over yet. It's been a long journey. Metgasco is in court trying to have the suspension overturned, but we want them to know that people are prepared to come together to protect the Northern Rivers," said spokesman Dean Draper.

He is hoping the crowd will match or exceed the 7000 that turned up in 2012.

"The level of community engagement about the risks of unconventional gas is very high," he said.

"The declaration (to be gasfield free) is the culmination of a grassroots democracy campaign that has been conducted in every local government area in this region. There are now 142 self-declared gasfield free communities in the Northern Rivers, with an average of 95.3 % of respondents answering 'yes' to the question 'do you want neighbourhood to be gasfield free?'"

Yesterday Mr Draper presented Premier Mike Baird with a folder of letters from residents and invited him to attend the rally.

"We applaud the policy announced by Labor that they will protect the Northern Rivers if elected, and also the Greens."
