Grafton players' rankings soar

AS the hype from Australian Open subsides and summer cools down, for many juniors across New South Wales the 2010 season is just kicking off.

Grafton locals Brittany Huxley, Taylah Beckman, Georgia Allen, Liam Davenport and Jacob Sullivan are tipped to be the ones to watch in 2010 after just giving a glipse of their potential in the past 12 months.

For the past few years, Grafton has been a breeding ground for junior tennis talent as they dominate the Medibank Junior Tennis calendar.

With 16 juniors ranked among the best in Australia, these juniors are set to take the 2010 tournament calendar by storm.

Fifteen-year-old Sullivan is currently ranked 260 in Australia, behind heavyweight Lleyton Hewitt and his young-gun combatant Bernard Tomic.

Sullivan’s performance throughout 2009 saw his ranking soar from 748 to 260.

The climb can be attributed to his star performance at December’s national tournament as well as another solid display last month.

These results catapulted the tall left-hander into a place atthe National High Performance Academy in Sydney.

Huxley, also 15, holds the highest ranking of the Grafton elite currently sitting at 166.

She climbed 33 ranking points with 10 wins throughout 2009, not to mention the 22 finals appearances in what could be a breakthrough year for the talented junior.

Beckman, 12, is another who has tasted sweet success in recent times.

She finished the year with a respectable ranking of 431 while fellow boom prodigy Davenport ended at 710.

Both will be aiming to scale even greater heights this time.

Outside of these highly ranked juniors are those youngsters who are only just about to make their mark on the Australian ranking.

Grafton is yet to see the effects that Allen, Bonnie Moon, Darcy Martin and Zoe Barton will have on this competitive landscape.

Medibank Junior Tennis events throughout New South Wales provide these juniors with the ideal platform to pit their skills against fellow athletes.

Medibank Private’s investment in junior tennis in NSW extends to more than 120 tournaments annually and aims to enhance a participant’s experience in the sport, ultimately leading to more children taking to the court.
