Raper and Coote call Mbye tackle ‘fantastic’

LEGENDS Johnny Raper and Ron Coote have hailed Moses Mbye's try-saving tackle against the Titans at the weekend as one of best they have seen in years.

"It was a wonderful tackle," Raper, widely considered the game's greatest cover defender, told APN.

Raper, who won eight premierships with the mighty St George Dragons, was renowned for chopping down players with his classic tackling style.

Mbye's 56th minute tackle drew comparisons with Scott Sattler's magnificent grand final try-saver for Penrith in the 2003 decider, which the Panthers went on to win.

The Bulldogs utility sprinted 90m across field at full pace to drive try-bound Titan Brad Tighe into touch, just centimetres from the line.

Coote, a rangy lock who won premierships with South Sydney and the Roosters in the 1970s, and was known for saving tries, said the effort of Mbye (pictured) was "absolutely fantastic".

"It was as good a tackle as I have seen in many years," Coote said.

"It reminded me a lot of Turvey (former Canterbury halfback Steve Mortimer).

"He used to chase them down and push them into the corner."

Mybe, who played for the Noosa Pirates as a junior, has another year left on his contract with the Bulldogs but will be hot property on the open player market if he continues to improve.

Some good judges are already suggesting he will be the perfect replacement for Queensland five-eighth Johnathan Thurston when he decides to call it quits.
