Rebel Melrose speaks out about Group 2 death threats

THE MAN at the centre of the Group 2 death threats scandal has chosen to speak out.

South Grafton Rebel Jay Melrose was suspended for the remainder of the season after allegedly threatening to kill referee James Maggio in the Rebels' May 11 fixture against Coffs Comets.

The incident saw the game, which was part of the club's centenary celebrations, stopped early by Maggio who no longer felt safe at the ground.

The story was picked up by Rugby League Week, with many online commenters calling for Melrose to be kicked out of rugby league.

Melrose's side of the story has not yet been publicly aired, but the 23-year-old has decided to break his silence.

Pick up Monday's The Daily Examiner for the full story.
