Rebels fan banned for 12 months after brawl
A South Grafton Rebels supporter who was the main instigator of a post-match brawl at McKittrick Park on Sunday has been barred from all Rebels fixtures for 12 months.
The incident occurred after the conclusion of the Rebels and Grafton Ghosts local derby clash on Sunday in which the Rebels ran out 28-14 victors.
According to witnesses the alleged perpetrator instigated a verbal altercation with opposition supporters and players before it became a brawl among bystanders.
Group 2 chief administration officer Jim Anderson praised the South Grafton club for acting quickly to eject the supporter and penalise him appropriately.
"As a result of the incident the South Grafton Rebels have conducted their own inquiries into the matter," Anderson said.
"The club have barred a supporter for 12 months. They have served the supporter with a letter to inform him of the suspension from games which is the Group's protocol.
"You have to give the club a chance to sort out their own problems. He was evicted at the time of the incident as well."
Anderson understood that no players registered to Group 2 were involved in the incident.
The ban on the South Grafton supporter will extend to all of the Rebels match ups until April 26, 2017 but Anderson admitted at times it will not be easy to police.
"It is very hard to keep track of every fan," he said. "You can't really send a photo of the person to every ground in the Group.
"But as I understand through discussions with the club is that this supporter does not generally travel to away games.
"The Rebels have said that if they do spot the fan at away games they will notify the ground managers at the game."
Anderson said it was deserved punishment and hoped the severity will curb supporters from becoming involved in similar incidents.
"We have barred over-enthusiastic supporters before and we will continue to do so," he said.
"We do not want that sort of behaviour at Group fixtures. It was a fantastic day of football action which was ruined by one idiot starting something after the game."
