Rebels tell: South Grafton to reveal Team of the Century
IT all started with a casual bar room chat.
"Gary Nichols and I were at the pub one afternoon," South Grafton Rebels life member Steve Danvers said.
"Rebels vice president John Matthews approached me for ideas for the 100th year."
It was suggested that the Rebels should name a team of the century and Nichols, having already been involved in similar projects with local cricket and hockey clubs, agreed to help decide the team.
The former Daily Examiner sports journalist and avid league fan prepared a comprehensive shortlist for each position as organisers sought to identify the greatest players to wear the red and white South Grafton jersey during the club's 100-year history.
The five selectors - Danvers, Dennis Pye, Col Mitchell, John Brown and Terry Frazer - had a difficult task reducing the list to a 17-man squad and coach.
"It was pretty tough," Danvers said.
"You can't satisfy everybody."
The final line-up will be unveiled in tomorrow's Daily Examiner.
Meanwhile all is in readiness for this weekend's centenary celebrations.
An informal get-together at the Royal Hotel tomorrow night will kick-off the weekend with a host of former players, including several members of the centenary side set to attend.
A who's who of South Grafton Rugby League will be at McKittrick Park on Saturday afternoon for the rescheduled Rebels match against Group Two competition leaders Coffs Comets.
Also expected to make an appearance on game day is former ARL chief executive officer Geoff Carr, St George great Ricky Walford and Larry "The Black Flash" Corowa.
The trio will be special guests at the 100-year Anniversary Dinner on Saturday night at South Grafton Ex-Services Club with organisers anticipating about 250 guests in total.
Tickets are still available until midday today. Contact Steve Danvers on 0427 449 661 or South Grafton Ex-Services Club on 6642 1422 to reserve your ticket.
