Report on fishing industry to restart marine reserves fight

THE political fight over the nation's protected marine reserves is set to be renewed with a Productivity Commission "issues paper" calling for submissions.

The issues paper released on Tuesday showed the commission was examining economic and environmental regulations and laws governing the marine fishing industry.

It has called for submissions on issues from state-federal regulatory overlap to the protection of the Commonwealth marine reserves network.

The commission's paper said the inquiry, initiated by Treasurer Scott Morrison, would run until December 2016 and focus on increasing "productivity and competitiveness".

It said while fisheries regulation would be a key issue examined, it aimed to tackle regulation "without compromising economic, social or environmental objectives".

The paper is out for submissions until mid-March, before a draft report is due in August this year.

A second round of consultations will then go ahead before the final report is released.
