Future map of Seven Mile Beach
LENNOX HEAD'S Seven Mile Beach will soon be one of the best-mapped beaches in NSW.
The University of NSW has secured three years of funding to study 10 “characteristic beaches”.
Associate Professor Ian Goodwin said Lennox Head was chosen as one of those to be researched for the project, which aims to forecast how changes in wave patterns and rising sea levels will affect beach erosion.
“We'll be using field observations, CoastalCOMS cameras and waves buoys,” he said.
“The whole point is to try and determine how these beaches behave to different wave climates and sand transport.”
“UNSW has teamed up with CoastalCOMS to use its existing network of cameras at various beaches along the coastline.
The team will arrive in Lennox Head next week to start some of their field work.
“We'll be surveying the beach with a GPS, measuring it in high detail with a view to come back and repeat that process a couple of times a year,” Assoc Prof Goodwim said.
The NSW Office of Environment and Heritage is also involved in the research, and will be conducting a comprehensive sea bed survey off Lennox Head.
