Rhys’s 4 floods in 4 years

FLOODS are a bit so-so for four-year-old Ulmarra lad Rhys Fletcher.

So far there has been one every year of his life, although his mum Susie believes this one might be the first he's aware of.

"He says he can sort of remember one last year, but I think this will be the first one he really knows about."

This time the flood has been a big adventure, with Rhys joining his father Todd in helping to move the family's cattle to an agistment property at Coldstream.

"Rhys went off with Todd to find the cattle and get them in. It's very exciting for him," she said.

Tonight the family will be bunkered in the house on their property fronting the Pacific Hwy on the outskirts of town.

Rhys, who turned four on December 28, experienced his first flood in May 2009 when he was only five months old.

He missed his annual hit in 2010, but it has been a regular January experience ever since.

Rhys is soon to begin his next big adventure, school.

"He's off to school one day a week for transition class," said his mum. "He's been going to kindy two days a week and is due to go back this week.

"I don't think that will be happening."

Last night Rhys spent the night with his sister, eight-month-old Zali, with his parents waiting out another flood, despite evacuation orders being issued for the area.

"Our house is built on a mound, so we think we're safe," Mrs Fletcher said.
