CURRENT Clarence Valley Council Mayor Richie Williamson is storming ahead in the 2012 local elections and has secured the first seat on council.

Votes are coming in thick and fast and the returning office is a hive of activity as polling booths across the Clarence Valley phone in their results.

At last count Cr Williamson had 5,677 votes, which is 29.94% of the votes counted.

New candidate Andrew Baker is polling second and has secured 11% of the vote so far with more than 2,200 votes.

Current councillors Sue Hughes and Jim Simmons are polling strongly with more than 6% of the votes counted and newcomer Jason Kingsley is matching them vote for vote.

Returning officer Cliff Mitchell insists it's too early to call anything and final results won't be revealed until Tuesday or Wednesday.

It looks like going down to the wire with the final few positions.
