Grafton riders take home state titles

FIVE riders from the Grafton Pony Club saddled up against almost 300 competitors from around NSW in the State Sporting and Campdraft Championships at Gloucester on the weekend.

But the small number of representatives belied the achievements of the Zone 15 team, which bagged three state titles and a host of other top results at the championships.

Nathan Brown, Sita Brown and Tara Kelly all claimed an individual state title by winning an event in their respective age divisions.

Fellow teammates Niav Bacon and Matthew Goodwin also performed admirably.   Nathan and Sita Brown each claimed a state title in their respective flag races, while Tara Kelly won the under-12 Bending Race.

"As our Zone 15 riders rotated around to all of the seven sporting events held, it was difficult to judge just how each of our riders were doing compared to others," Grafton Pony Club publicity officer Angela Hughes said.

"When riding for state titles, you're competing against the best of the best so competition was tough with large numbers of competitors in each age group, like the over 17 years, who had more than 100 entrants.

"Nathan's result to win the 17-25 years flag race was a terrific achievement given the huge number of competitors in his division."

Ribbons are awarded up to 10th place, however only the top five from certain events are given the chance to compete in the finals.

"All six children within our zone came away with a placing and ribbon, three of whom took out a state title, which is an immense effort at such a high level of competition," Hughes said.

"Sunday saw another large field competing for the state title in the campdrafting events.

"A huge effort was again achieved with four of our riders taking out a place in each of their age groups."
