RIO 2016: Another gold for superstar Phelps

SWIMMING: Michael Phelps has won his 19th Olympic gold medal as America rounded off a record-breaking night in the pool by winning the 4x100m men's freestyle relay in Rio.

The Australian team of James Roberts, Kyle Chalmers, James Magnussen and Cameron McEvoy finished in third with France taking the silver.

The bronze medal was the only one for the Australian team on a day when three world records were broken.

Great Britain won its first medal as Adam Peaty took gold in the men's 100m breaststroke final, breaking his own world mark with a time of 57.13 seconds.

Peaty is the first British man to win an Olympic swimming gold medal since Adrian Moorhouse, who won the same event in Seoul in 1988.

Sweden's Sarah Sjostrom clocked 55.58s, some 0.16 seconds inside her previous world-best mark set last year to win the 100m butterfly with Australian Emma McKeon finishing seventh, before American superstar Katie Ledecky also set a world record in the women's 400m freestyle final with an astonishing swim - she bettered her previous world record by almost two seconds, clocking 3 minutes 56.46s..

Ledecky was 4.77 seconds ahead of Britain's Jazz Carlin in silver

Australian duo Tamsin Cook finished sixth, and Jessica Ashwood finished seventh.

All told it was a mixed night in the pool for the Australians.

Gold medal chance Emily Seebohm only just scraped into today's 100m backstroke final in seventh spot, while Madison Wilson finished fourth fastest in the semi-final and also qualified.

Seebohm's partner Mitch Larkin fared better, to be third-quickest qualifier for the men's final of the 100m backstroke.

Thomas Fraser-Holmes missed out on advancing to the men's 200m freestyle final by just 0.01s.Fraser-Holmes was ninth-quickest in the semis with China's Sun Yang, who was booed by a section of the crowd, was fastest into the final.Fellow Aussie Taylor McKeown did manage to make the final of the 100m breaststroke, finishing eighth fastest, though her teammate Georgia Bohl missed out.
