RIO 2016: Aussies and Kiwis out of sevens tournament

RUGBY: Australia's men have failed in their attempt to win an Olympic medal in the sevens, getting knocked out in the quarter-final by South Africa.

The Blitzboks ran out 22-5 winners on a wet night in Rio to end the Aussies' chances of replicating the women's gold medal effort earlier in the week.

The Aussies had defeated the Boks in their final pool game earlier in the day 12-5 but could not put in a repeat performance.

New Zealand was also knocked out following a 12-7 quarter-final defeat to Fiji.

New Zealand only snuck into the quarter-finals thanks to the rugby sevens series champions when Fiji beat USA in pool play, handing the All Blacks sevens the final quarter-final spot.

Fiji will face Japan in the semi-finals.

Great Britain's Dan Bibby scored a try in golden-point extra time to defeat Argentina 5-0 after the sides were locked at 0-0 after full-time.

The Brits will face South Africa in the last four.
