RIO 2016: Matildas make quarter-finals

FOOTBALL: A double from substitute Michelle Heyman has helped Australia qualify for the quarter-final of the Olympics tournament on Saturday.

Heyman scored only three minutes after entering the field as a second-half replacement before doubling her tally soon after.

Lisa De Vanna, Clare Polkinghorne, Alanna Kennedy and Kyah Simon also scored as the Matildas qualified for the last eight as one of two best-performing third-placed teams.

A 7-0 win would have secured second spot in Group F on goal difference as Germany lost 2-1 to Canada but a 91st-minute strike from Emmaculate Msipa ended those hopes and the Aussies must now face one of women's football's powerhouses Brazil or USA.

De Vanna scored the opener from Katrina Gorry's cross before co-captain Polkinghorne doubled lead inside 15 minutes.Kennedy headed a fourth before Simon made it 4-0 early in the second half.

Heyman headed in after a goalmouth scramble that ended with Zimbabwe goalkeeper Chido Dzingirai being stretchered off before a neat finish brought her second.
