Roar goalie happy to be 'home'
BRISBANE Roar goalkeeper Mackenzie Arnold says deciding to sign for the Queensland club was a no-brainer.
Arnold, 22, was born on the Gold Coast and after spells with the Perth Glory (twice) and Canberra United, the Australian international said she had no choice but to come to Brisbane.
"I think it's been a long time coming since starting in the W-League in 2011,” Arnold said.
"Finally being home and getting to play in front of family and friends, it's a special feeling and I am really looking forward to it.
"It's something that everyone wants, to play in front of loved ones, and to have that in your home state it's important.
"I had options here and there but like I said, coming home to Brisbane was a long time coming and now to be finally here is good.”
The Roar kicks off the W-League season against Sydney FC at Spencer Park in Brisbane tomorrow afternoon (4pm AEST) and Arnold said the game would have a State of Origin feel to it.
"I play with a lot of girls in the national team, so I know them really well,” she said.
"It is always a really good hit-out between Brisbane and Sydney, so to be part of that will be really exciting.
"I am really looking forward to it. It's 100% a Queenslander against New South Wales thing.
"Every time you watch a game between the teams it's really physical, so it will be a really good thing to be a part of.”
Arnold said with a short season, it was important to start well but said with the squad put together by the Roar, the team was set for a good campaign.
"Our season is about 12 weeks,” she said.
"So to get off to a good start will be a positive thing.
"But it's not everything and we will see how we go.”
As well as Arnold, the Roar has Matildas Katrina Gorry and captain Clare Polkinghorne, both of whom have re-signed, in its squad.
There are also seven new signings for the team, which just missed out on a grand final spot last season, highlighted by American midfielder Maddy Evans, who has signed from Orlando Pride, and Danish defender Nina Frausing-Pedersen, who has come in from Swedish outfit FC Rosengard.
Midfielder Sunny Franco returns to Brisbane following a season with Sydney FC, while goalkeeper Georgina Worth has joined the Roar from Canberra United.
