CRCA CRICKET: A top-class effort with the ball from Harwood opening bowler Hayden McMahon has guided the ladder leaders to a comprehensive first innings' victory over GDSC Easts.

But it was a valiant fightback in the second innings from Easts' Matt Robins (63), who was promoted up the order to opener, that prevented Harwood from clinching outright honours and double competition points from the clash.

After claiming a wicket earlier in the closing hour on day one McMahon (4 for 33 off 13) was up to his old tricks, removing wicketkeeper Trevor Cropp (17) before claiming Easts' junior Jackson Grieve in the same over for a duck.

McMahon also managed to remove the dangerous Andrew Latham (11) after he and captain Ben Hill (31) had combined together to produce a 20-run partnership.

All this happened before McMahon threw on the gloves and the pads to finish out the afternoon behind the stumps.

Matt Young (2 for 9 off 5) chipped in for a couple of wickets in the middle order before a run out to Daley Durrant (1 for 29 off 9) and a castle crasher from Luke Many (1 for 5 off 5) brought the Easts innings to a close 158 runs short of Harwood's first innings total of 1-269.

Harwood captain Nathan Ensbey decided to send the Easts back in as Harwood used up the remaining 50 overs to chase an outright result.

After a comfortable showing in the first innings Matt Robins was promoted up the order to opener and the hard-hitter did not disappoint, scoring with freedom.

But a crafty Doug Harris (4 for 55 off 10) threatened to put an end to the resistance, snaring two wickets in the one over to turn the momentum.

But a valiant effort from Robins saw the opener hang on to grind out the innings and not give up the extra competition points.
