Catamarans to expand regatta

CLARENCE River Yacht Club secretary Helen McLeod says the addition of catamarans to the program should see a bumper turnout for this weekend’s regatta.

The Friday-Saturday-Sunday event will feature the boats for the first time, expecting to draw large crowds to the banks of the river.

Action is likely to start around 12pm for the 30-plus crews arriving.

“It’s a large number for us,” McLeod said.

“This is the first time we have had that many.”

Competitors to hit Grafton’s shores include Brisbane sailors but Olympian Andrew Landenburger is likely to remain the feature attraction.

“Andrew coming back to town has brought all the A-class boats with him,” McLeod said.

“And he will be launching a brand new boat.”

Boats will leave from the ramp at the North St end of Kirshner St and head to Brushgrove.

A twilight race will be held on Friday night before Saturday’s main racing.
