Shoals connections face big decision
SHOALS shed her underrated tag with an emphatic Sangster Stakes success, giving owner-breeder John Messara reason to consider setting the filly for Royal Ascot and The Everest.
Messara said a decision on whether Shoals is sent to England for the Diamond Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot then the July Cup at Newmarket would be made this week and Everest slot holders were circling.
"I've had some slot holders contact me about The Everest after she won in Adelaide,'' he said. "I need to sit down with the other part-owner, Jonathon Munz, and look at all our options but The Everest is obviously very tempting.''
Messara said the Anthony Freedman-trained Shoals would have a second inoculation today before a possible Royal Ascot campaign next month.
Shoals probably hasn't received due recognition as a three-time Group One winner this season. Her outstanding Sangster Stakes triumph complements wins in the Myer Classic and Surround Stakes.
Champion mare Winx is the only horse to win more Group One races this season with six majors, while Happy Clapper and Trapeze Artist have also won three times.
Trapeze Artist has already been snapped up by slot holders Aquis for the $13 million The Everest (1200m) at Royal Randwick on October 13.
Happy Clapper is also being aimed at the world's richest turf race although connections are still negotiating with Everest slot-holders.
