'Run and scream': Policewoman's 7 ways to dodge attack

PERSONAL Violence is significantly under reported to police.

Personal crime offenders target people they perceive are vulnerable.

They also target people they believe are likely to offer the least resistance.

Here are a few tips to assist you when you're out and about in the Gladstone community.

Gladstone is a safe community.

However, there are predators who seek out opportunities to take advantage of others.

Here are seven tips avoid becoming a victim of personal violence:

1. Appear confident and self assured when walking about.

2. Use strong and positive body language.

For example, using eye contact when passing someone in the street.\

3. Look streetwise rather than fearful.

4. Be aware of your surrounding and alert to what is going on around you.

5. Listen to, trust and act on your instincts.

6. If you sense danger from someone, something or a place, immediately remove yourself to a safer place.

7. Do what you think will best preserve your safety.

If you are being attacked, you should run away, scream, or try and negotiate with the attacker.

You should always employ physical defence as a last resort.

And do not put up a fight for your bag or other personal possessions.

If someone threatens you and tries to steal your belongings, the safest option is always to surrender the items.

Take note of the offender's description and immediately report the incident to police.

If you are a victim of any form of assault you are encouraged to report the incident to police.

If you observe suspicious behaviour or are the victim of threatening behaviour, call police or CrimeStoppers if you would like to remain anonymous on 1800 333 000.
