Salute to Captain Holmes

WHILE Harwood Island resident Bobby Holmes may have clocked up his 73rd year, he really doesn’t look a day over 21 and there’s not too many people who would argue that point.

With a pin-sharp mind, this old fella is larger than life, a larrikin by nature and has a heart that is much bigger than Phar Lap’s.

Captain Bobby moved to Maclean in 1989 when his parents bought a house there, moving later to Turkey Island where he took a caretakers position on a cane farm for a friend. In 1996 he was flooded in and decided to hop to Harwood Island.

“For me Harwood Island is paradise, it is family, everyone worries about everyone else here, they look after each other,” Bobby said.

Bobby got his nick name ‘Captain’ because he used to have a 34-foot cruiser which he sold but the nickname stuck.

He loves a punt and can be seen with his race guide on a Saturday morning at the Harwood Hotel.

Happy Birthday for last weekend, Bobby; you are much loved by many!
