Sara Storer keen on Gympie Muster

NAMING a love song after a noxious weed doesn't seem very romantic, but Gympie Muster star Sara Storer's Lovegrass is a sweet tune.

The title track to Storer's new album is a loving tribute to her husband Dave, but she reveals the song was a last-minute addition.

"It was just a random word that came to my head one morning," she said.

"It was actually a belated thought. I'd finished the alb

um and the word popped in my head."

The 14-time Golden Guitar winner will launch the album at this month's Gympie Muster.

"It's been a good three or four years since I've played there," she said.

"I'm looking forward to getting back there and catching up with people including the wonderful Gympie crowd."

She can't wait to see what punters think of her 12 new original tracks, her first since 2007's Silver Skies.

"It will be pretty much the first time they'll be played in front of an audience," she said.

"As a songwriter you're always excited to wonder what the crowd thinks of your new songs. When you talk to people afterwards they tell you why they liked different songs, and you work out which ones go better live."

Storer is a songwriter's artist. Among her biggest fans and co-writers are legendary Aussie songwriters Paul Kelly and John Williamson.

It was Williamson who, at the 2012 Tamworth Country Music Festival, inspired her to keep writing when she was suffering from writer's block.

"I was in a bit of a dry patch I guess you could say with songs. It was a bit of hard work," she said.

"I came away from Tamworth really inspired. One of those reasons was catching up with John and seeing him really excited over music.

"He writes all these amazing songs. He just writes about life, and I thought, 'I can do it too. I just need to get home and start writing'."

She sings the duet Pozie with Williamson on Lovegrass.

"It's a beautiful song, made so much more special with John doing the duet with me," she said.

"I'd been waiting a long time to find the right song for John, not just any old song.

"It's about a real-life person. A friend of mine here in Darwin was telling me a story about this fellow nick-named Pozie. She used to live out near his property. I was just so moved I said, 'I'm going to, if you don't mind, put that story into a song'."

The mum-of-three doesn't plan to tour with her album until next year, most likely after the Tamworth Country Music Festival, which makes her Gympie show all the more special.

Sara Storer performs at the Gympie Muster on Saturday August 24 at 6pm on the Main Stage.

Lovegrass will be released on August 23.
