Scrapping of carbon tax voted down in Senate
THE SENATE has voted down the Abbott Government's carbon tax repeal bills, further delaying the government's key election promise.
A 37-35 vote brought an end to four days of debate in the new Senate's first week of sitting over the nine bills to repeal the tax.
It was the latest in a string of defeats for the government against the new regime now controlling the upper house.
Among the new guard, Motoring Enthusiast Party Senator Ricky Muir voted with Labor and The Greens to secure the $2.5 billion Australian Renewable Energy Agency.
It was further complicated by the Opposition, Greens and Palmer United Party voting en bloc to secure $1.5 billion in income tax cuts.
However, the repeal bills are expected to be reintroduced when the Senate sits next week.
