Thick smoke haze from burn-offs blankets the coast

A two week program of hazard reduction was stepped up on the Coffs Coast on Wednesday.
A two week program of hazard reduction was stepped up on the Coffs Coast on Wednesday.

THAT smoke haze that blocked out the sun on the coast on Wednesday was mostly due to a two-week hazard reduction burn in preparation for the summer bushfire season.

The Rural Fire Service staged multiple hazard reduction burns and fought five scrub fires burning near Bellingen and throughout the Clarence Valley.

Firefighters will continue burns through to Friday between Nambucca Heads and Halfway Creek due to favourable weather conditions.

It's hoped strong coastal winds tending offshore in the mornings will clear the skies.

National Parks and Wildlife firefighters are burning vegetation near Nymboida in the Chaelundi and Binderay national parks, near Glenreagh in the Sherwood Nature Reserve, along Red Root Rd, west of Brooms Head and at Cascade in the Cascade National Park.

Rural Fire Service firefighters are also monitoring two large hazard reduction burns on the Pacific Hwy at Halfway Creek and near Coutts Crossing along Kangaroo Creek Rd.

Forests NSW today continued to contain a 60-hectare scrub fire along Scotchman's Range Trail.
