HAITIAN police have been searching cars and boats after 172 prisoners overpowered guards and escaped from a jail.

Police caught some after the breakout on Saturday in Arcahaie, about 45km north of the capital.

It is well away from the south-west slammed by Hurricane Matthew.

One guard was killed and others were injured. One prisoner died after falling while scaling a wall.

Haitian National Police set up numerous checkpoints to search vehicles.

The prisoners attacked when they were released from a crammed holding pen so they could shower.

The escapees stole weapons and some exchanged gunfire with police during the chaotic breakout.

Haiti's prisons are notoriously overcrowded and many inmates spend years in pre-trial detention.
